Abstract

Although unique diseases with diverse pathophysiology and disease trajectories, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s disease (PD) share numerous characteristics and care needs. All are associated with complex physical and neuropsychiatric symptoms, progressive functional impairments, and high levels of prolonged personal suffering and caregiver burden. Palliative care is underused for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly for long-term chronic diseases such as MS and PD. Coordinated, interdisciplinary care that incorporates palliative care throughout the disease trajectory is essential for relieving suffering and improving quality of life.
