Abstract
The conventional approach to the treatment of Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) has focused on symptom control using a step-up pharmacological intervention strategy with progressive intensification of therapy. It is now recognized that CD and UC are chronic progressive diseases and that treatment strategies should not only aim for symptom control, but also for blocking disease progression, bowel damage, and disability.1,2 The 3 pillars of modern care in CD and UC are early intervention, treat to target, and tight control (Figure 6-1).
