Abstract

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) people have historically been subjected to stigmatization, discrimination, and oppression resulting in significant disparities affecting both physical and mental health. Despite these disparities, LGBTQ+ people have also developed resilient strategies to adapt and thrive in society. Palliative care providers are uniquely trained to deliver high-quality, compassionate, affirmative, inclusive, and individualized care to patients living with serious illness and their caregivers. This chapter describes the unique palliative care needs of LGBTQ+ people facing serious illness and recommends evidence-based strategies in caring for them and their loved ones.
