Abstract
Scars represent the final stage of the wound healing process—a dynamic, multiphase sequence involving hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling, each of which is tightly regulated by a complex network of cellular and molecular mechanisms. Genetic predisposition plays a significant role in determining individual outcomes, influencing factors such as scar formation, hypertrophic scarring, or keloid development. Histological analysis reveals the structural changes within healing tissue, highlighting differences in collagen fiber arrangement, vascularity, and cellular composition between normal skin and scar tissue. Understanding these molecular and histological processes is crucial for advancing therapeutic strategies aimed at minimizing scar formation. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the nature of scars, integrating key concepts in the genetics and biology of wound healing.
