Abstract

Cells from a permanent culture established from normal human synovial tissue demonstrate an ability to take up polio virus and permit it to reproduce without any apparent cytopathic effect. A group of these cells were permitted to reproduce in the presence of polio I virus for several passages until the offspring became completely resistant to polio I virus infection. When these cells were irradiated with ultraviolet light, measurable virus uptake and reproduction re-occurred after several passages.
