Abstract

The viral arthritides represent a significant but frequently underrecognized group of joint disorders. Recent global trends, including the emergence and spread of new viral pathogens, shifting epidemiological patterns, increased international travel, and changes in vaccination practices, have contributed to the re-emergence and evolving clinical presentations of viral arthritides. Triggered by a diverse range of viral pathogens, these conditions manifest as arthritis or arthralgia through direct viral invasion of joint tissues or via immune-mediated mechanisms. The clinical spectrum ranges from transient arthralgias to persistent, disabling polyarthritis, with some cases closely mimicking chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthritis, posing substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Differentiating viral arthritides from autoimmune inflammatory arthritis is critical to avoid unnecessary immunosuppression and to guide appropriate management.
