Abstract
In order to examine the patterns of lesion distribution in cerebral aging, we review the clinicopathological analysis of 147 autopsy cases including cognitively intact cases, cases with age-associated memory impairment (AAMI) and fuses wild Alzheimer's disease (AD). Regardless of cognitive status, layer II of the entorhinal cortex is involved with neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) formation in all of the cases, while the (A) field of the hippocampus and the subiculum are less consistently affected. The inferior temporal cortex (area 20) is particularly prone to develop NFT in intellectually preserved elders. Quantitatively, AAMI correlates with NFT densities in layer II of the entorhinal cortex, and clinically overt AD with NFT densities in area 20. These observations demonstrate that mesial and inferior temporal lobe structures are affected frequently in brain aging.
