Abstract

The major working hypothesis for the genesis of cardiac lesions in young cardiomyopathic hamsters is microvascular spasm - a process which is prevented with verapamil. Our work has shown that stress is often lethal to these animals. The purpose of this experiment was to see if verapamil blocked the effect of stress. Instead, we learned that the drug sensitized the animals to the effects of stress.
