Abstract

This paper discusses the use of a robotic arm in the rehabilitation of stroke patients. A team of engineers and clinicians at the Metropolitan Center for High Technology and the Rehabilitation Institute of Detroit developed and field-tested a prototype robotic arm exercise system for movement-pattern therapy with stroke patients. An object delivery system is under development. The advantages of robotic technology include objective and standard data collection, reproducible treatment, continuous feedback to patients, and cost-effective delivery of therapy.
