Abstract

Epidemiologic studies have convincingly shown a relationship between obesity and type 2 diabetes and an increased risk of developing many types of cancer, as well as in some cases an increased risk of cancer-related mortality. There are a number of possible factors that maybe causally related such as hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, hyperlipidemia, IGFs, adipokines, and inflammatory cytokines. There is currently intense investigation to determine which factors are involved as this may lead to future therapeutic options. This chapter will describe in general, the epidemiologic studies as well as discuss the various animal models used to identify the possible causal mechanisms linking T2D and cancer.
