note = "Funding Information: A prime example is Research Project Grant (R01) funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The R01 is the original and historically oldest grant mechanism used by NIH. It provides support for health-related research and development. 1 An R01 is a mature award that gives the investigator 4 or 5 years of independent support, enough money and time to complete a project, publish results, and start writing their next application in time to get an award before the funding ends. A study 2 looked at 6 minority medical schools compared with 6 nonminority medical schools. In the minority medical schools, only 15% ± 4% of the total NIH support went to R01-type funding, whereas 65% ± 11% of the total NIH support went to R01-type funding at nonminority institutions. Dr J. Anderson Eloy{\textquoteright}s article on Diversifying Research and Funding explores this pipeline problem in detail and provides methods for ameliorating it. ",
