Abstract
While the role of nitrates, beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers in the treatment of myocardial ischemia and infarction has been shown, they are not complete therapies. They must be instituted early, often before ischemic episodes, and they cannot completely control injury to cells already damaged or those injured by reperfusion. Future therapies involving metabolic substrate manipulation, prostaglandins, or free radical scavengers need to be further investigated.
