Abstract
To the Editor: The study (Jan. 23 issue)1 of the comparative efficacy of foscarnet and ganciclovir for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) provides important information. On October 17, 1991, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a clinical alert from the National Institutes of Health about this study. The alert was widely disseminated. It stated that patients who received foscarnet lived an average of four months longer than those who received ganciclovir.
