title = "Traumatic endophthalmitis caused by an Erwinia species",
abstract = "A previously healthy 70-year-old white man sustained a plant injury to his left eye while gardening and was admitted here because of an ensuing perforated cornea and endophthalmitis. The lens was opaque and its anterior capsule was ruptured. Culture of fluid obtained by anterior chamber paracentesis yielded a species of the Erwinia herbicolalathyri group (Enterobacter agglomerans). Thirty-seven days after a course of cefazolin and gentamicin therapy, corneal edema necessitated a planned extracapsular cataract extraction. The aqueous humor and lens again revealed the identical Erwinia species in pure culture. The patient received another course of cefazolin and showed improvement after the lens aspiration.",

note = "Funding Information: A 70-year-old white man injured his left eye while clearing brush from his garden when a thorny brier branch snapped into his face. Examination on admission Sept. 2, 1975, revealed a best corrected visual acuity of R.E.: 6/7.5 (20/25), and L.E.: hand motions at 5 feet. Intraocular pressure by applanation tonometry was 16 mm Hg in the right eye and soft to palpation in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination showed a normal anterior segment of the right eye. The left eye had a swollen upper eyelid, and the conjunctiva was markedly injected with a mucopurulent discharge. The cornea of the left eye had a central perforating wound that had sealed, and the anterior chamber was formed. Microcystic corneal edema was present. A dense, white, 3-mm hypopyon was present with a fibrinous coagulum in the anteri- From the Department of Ophthalmology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York (Drs.
