Abstract

This work explores the transport phenomena in the retina, focusing on interstitial fluid and solute dynamics, and their role in drusen deposition in retinal pathology. By integrating mathematical modelling with experimental observations, the study aims to elucidate key mechanisms underpinning age-related macular degeneration and drusen accumulation through retinal layers. The study integrates Darcy-Brinkman equations for fluid flow and advection-diffusion models for solute transport while developing an in vitro retina-on-a-chip model for validation. Preliminary results emphasize the importance of retinal permeability in influencing local fluid and solute distribution, offering insights for future AMD therapies.
