Abstract

The opioid epidemic has adversely affected patient recruitment and consequently prolonged time until study completion for our recent randomized controlled trials. Opioid-tolerant surgical patients create a dilemma between internal and external validity in regional anesthesia-related randomized controlled trials. We have highlighted several problems performing experimental trial research in the opioid epidemic while also detailing potential solutions.
