Abstract
To the Editor: In the excellent article by Weiss on tissue destruction by neutrophils (Feb. 9 issue),1 there is an implicit assumption that neutrophils lack endogenous reducing substances that could quench intracellular or extracellular oxidants. We would therefore like to emphasize that ascorbic acid is present in human neutrophils, in concentrations 20 to 30 times higher than in plasma.2 Although the function of ascorbic acid in neutrophils is unknown, it has been proposed that it quenches free radicals,3 either within or perhaps outside neutrophils.
