In this issue of Molecular Cell, Cho et al. (2019) identify a mechanism by which the mitochondrial division machinery provides selective pressure to identify dysfunctional organelles through the coordinated action of DRP1, Zip1, and Zn ²⁺ transport into mitochondria.
