Abstract

Therapeutic phlebotomy entails the removal of blood to treat diseases in which decreasing red blood cell mass, hematocrit, and blood viscosity or depleting iron stores enable management of disease-associated symptoms and complications. Standardized interval and frequency of therapeutic phlebotomy for each disease are currently unavailable. Therefore, specific regimens are individually tailored to patient's needs. Novel therapies may obviate the need for therapeutic phlebotomy in the future.
