Abstract
The use of routine operative cholangiogram prior to exploration of the bile duct at the time of cholecystectomy in 230 patients was evaluated. The study indicates that carefully performed and properly interpreted cholangiograms have been significant factors in obtaining a high rate of positive common bile duct exploration. We recommend that operative cholangiogram be performed at the time of cholecystectomy, unless the bile duct has been well visualized preoperatively, to minimize the chance of overlooking the stones.
