Abstract
The ego strengthening use of wit and the comic by a borderline psychotic child is discussed. Serving a valuable defensive function, this patient's use of wit allowed him to eventually confront the despair beneath the comedy. Specific techniques for therapeutic reinforcement of wit are suggested.
