The role of monoamines in learning and memory consolidation

Abstract

Results of a study suggest that dopamine and its metabolism is involved in the phenomena of learning, consolidation, and retrieval. Thus, this aminergic system appears to establish not only interrelationships 'among primitive deeper structures commonly implicated in the control of visceral and affective functions' but also in memory processes. Much work on the analysis of the enzymological and behavioral phenomena remains to be done before a clear picture will emerge. So far, the data are consistent with the assumption that in the authors' system, mescaline is a dopamine depletor. The information acquired may also throw some light on the mechanism of action of mescaline on man and on some basic reactions involved in acquisition, storage, and retrieval of information. Finally, it is felt that the goldfish test could serve as a useful model for the study of L dopa on some cognitive functions of parkinsonian patients.
