Abstract

Current roadway lighting recommendations in Britain and North America do not formally address the illumination of areas adjacent to the roadway. However, peripheral vision used to detect potential hazards in these areas is very important to safe driving. New roadway lighting recommendations may have to be developed to facilitate peripheral vision while driving. Both the intensity and spectral power distributions of pole-mounted lighting systems would have to be modified considerably. New recommendations would have significant impacts on the development of new lighting products and on electric energy requirements.
