N1 - Funding Information: or unessential. Efforts have been made to interpret some of the findings in the kwashiorkor pattern because of their implications in the prophylaxis and therapy of the disease. This study was supported in part from a research grant from the National Institutes of Health and a grant from the Committee on Protein Malnutrition of the National Research Council-National Academy of Sciences. We are indebted to a number of investigators in the different countries for the selection of patients, and the collection and process- ing of blood. 4 of the 12 patients from Mexico were studied by a joint team of investigators from New York University and the Hospital Infantil in Mexico City (Westall et al. 1958); the other 8 cases were studied later by the Mexican members of the team (Cravioto et al. 1959), using the same apparatus and procedure, and they are included in this report through the courtesy of Dr. J. Cravioto. 3 of the patients from Haiti (subjects B, s, and D) were observed by one of us (S. E. S.) at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Deschapelles, through the courtesy of Dr. Larimer Mellon; the other 5 (subjects 1 to 5) were admitted to the Municipal Hospital in Port-au-Prince. Dr. Claude Sansaricq observed these patients and collected the blood. The patients from Jamaica were observed at the metabolic unit of the hospital of the University of the West Indies, at Mona, and Dr. John Waterlow allowed us to study their blood specimens. The patients from Senegal were admitted to the Hospital A. Le Dantec, in Dakar, on the service of Dr. J. Senecal. The blood was collected and processed by Dr. L. Aubry and Dr. H. Dupin. The 4 Nigerian subjects were patients of Dr. W. R. F. Collis, in University Hospital, Ibadan, and the blood was processed by the microbiology department. The patients from Ghana were studied and the blood was pro- cessed by Dr. Alfred Neumann and Dr. Charlotte G. Neumann, who were members of a team engaged in a hsematological investiga- tion under the auspices of Harvard University. The patients from Egypt were observed at the Children’s Hospital in Cairo by Dr. Nemat Hashem, who also collected the blood speci- mens. These were processed at the U.S. Naval Research Unit in Cairo by Captain John Seal. The patients from Jordan had been inmates of refugee camps in Jericho, and Dr. Amin S. Majaj gave us the opportunity to study them; they were admitted to the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem on his service. Processing of the blood was carried out in part in the microbiology department of the American University of Beirut. The patients from India were admitted to the Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad, on the service of Dr. P. S. Venkatachalam, who pro- cessed the blood in the laboratories of the Nutrition Institute in Hyderabad.
