The management of solar lentigines: The value of combination therapy

A number of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic modalities have been used to treat solar lentigines, a common and benign dermatosis that, nevertheless, may be distressing to patients. Interventions include procedures such as cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, cauterization with chemical agents such as α-hydroxy acids, and laser surgery. Pharmacologic treatments include topical tretinoin, the bleaching agents hydroquinone or 4-hydroxyanisole (mequinol), or their combination. Combining different pharmacologic agents and combining pharmacologic agents with procedures are valuable therapeutic approaches that may be appropriate for many people with this condition. In addition, all patients should use a sunscreen or sun block to prevent exposure to UV light.
