Abstract

HIV seropositive men are at risk for transmitting virus to their partners through sexual intercourse. Sperm washing techniques utilize ultracentrifugation and swim up techniques to separate the motile sperm fraction from the semen and cellular components known to harbor the virus. Sperm washing combined with either intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization has been highly effective in allowing uninfected partners of HIV seropositive men the opportunity to have a child with a greatly reduced risk of infection.
