Abstract

Chronic total occlusions (CTO) are among the most challenging lesions in the management of coronary artery disease, particularly if percutaneous coronary intervention is being attempted. Understanding the histologic features of CTOs has contributed to refinements in technologies and techniques, which has improved the success rates of percutaneous coronary intervention for CTO lesions. Here, we describe how important differences in plaque composition and morphology may impact treatment strategies and lead to further refinements of CTO PCI.
