Abstract
There are many overlaps between the immune system and the endocrine system, and the effects of hormones on the proliferation and differentiation of immune cells is widely studied. Of particular importance is the role of the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I (GH/IGF-I) axis in immune function. Whether these effects are brought about by the circulating (endocrine) hormones or via paracrine/autocrine mechanisms remains to be conclusively determined for different immune cell types and tissues. Nevertheless the importance of the GH/IGF-I axis in immune responsiveness, from the data summarized in this review, is clear.
