Abstract

The evolution of dialysis, from its beginning as a laboratory demonstration to the high technology procedure that it is today, has been accompanied by changes in socioeconomics, physician behavior, government administration, its relationship to the discipline of nephrology, and technological development. Dialysis is now a worldwide industry as well as a vital therapeutic procedure with genuine scientific opportunities to improve the understanding of heart disease, endocrinology, bone disease, and other problems, in contrast to its earlier stages as a purely technological process.
