Abstract

As the number of Americans living with serious illness grows, how will our fragmented, top-heavy healthcare system respond? How can we ensure high-quality care for our most vulnerable patients? The evolution of palliative care provides insight into efficient, effective models of care for seriously ill patients in their communities, and the system redesign and workforce repositioning that will be necessary to respond to our seriously ill patients' needs and preferences at a national scale.
