Abstract

Many studies confirm the clinical findings that appendectomy is rare in UC. Pathologists report that acute suppurative appendicitis is rare in both UC and CD. The declining rate of appendicitis has not been reflected in any increase in the incidence of UC, which has been stable for many years. Appendectomy does not protect the rate of recurrence of resected CD. The hypothesis that appendectomy protects against UC is based on postulated assumptions regarding the role of the appendix in the gut immune system.
