The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is considered a major public health challenge today. More than 1500 cases have been reported worldwide since an outbreak of opportunistic infections and Kaposi's sarcoma in male homosexuals was first recognized in 1980 and described in 1981. The epidemic has spread, and additional populations at risk have been identified. The case fatality rate exceeds 80%, and the end to this century's plague is nowhere in sight. The case of a bisexual male with AIDS is presented. The discussion focuses on the clinical manifestations, immunology, possible etiologies, predisposing factors, and management of AIDS.
