Abstract

Medialization thyroplasty is rapidly becoming a standard technique for the management of unilateral vocal fold paralysis and, to a lesser degree, sulcus vocalis and vocal fold atrophy with bowing. This article discusses general considerations, technique, and preoperative and postoperative quantitative analysis of results in 33 patients operated on by one surgeon. Emphasis ought to be placed on the necessity of quantifying results so the procedure can be critically evaluated among surgeons and institutions. For this purpose, it is important that uniform world standards of measurement be established.
