Abstract
To the Editor: Rothenberg et al. report (Nov. 19 issue)1 that the survival rates for patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in New York City are substantially higher than those reported in our studies of patients in San Francisco.2, 3 For example, the two-year survival rates in New York were 51 percent for patients initially given a diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma only and 25 percent for patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia only; the corresponding rates in San Francisco were 34 and 2 percent (Fig. 1 and 2). The primary reason for these differences is that the rates in San Francisco are.
