Abstract

To the Editor: Rothenberg et al. report (Nov. 19 issue)¹ that the survival rates for patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in New York City are substantially higher than those reported in our studies of patients in San Francisco.^{2, 3} For example, the two-year survival rates in New York were 51 percent for patients initially given a diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma only and 25 percent for patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia only; the corresponding rates in San Francisco were 34 and 2 percent (Fig. 1 and ²). The primary reason for these differences is that the rates in San Francisco are.
