Abstract
The extensor tendon system is a complex structure that is critical to hand function. Solid anatomical fund of knowledge is a prerequisite to understanding the intricate balance between tendons, ligaments, and pulleys responsible for wrist and finger extension. Extensor tendons are susceptible to injury and scar because of their vulnerable subcutaneous position. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of extensor tendon are critical to preserve function and prevent deformity. Similar to flexor tendon injuries, significant risk of scar and contracture after extensor tendon injury exists, requiring a careful balance between immobilization and motion. This chapter reviews the anatomy, clinical evaluation, and management of extensor tendon injury and dysfunction.
