Abstract

Both sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) fall under a broader umbrella of immune mediated hearing losses. In SSNHL, the inflammatory response may be the result of an extrinsic pathogen (viral infection), whereas the inflammatory response in AIED is the result of an intrinsic attack on self without an obvious extrinsic insult. Mechanistic studies detailing the inflammatory cascades in SSNHL and AIED have been hampered by the limited access to the human inner ear and the poor concordance between results achieved in animal models and human disease.
