Abstract

Starting from the rate equations and the theory of multilayer dielectric film, a dynamic transfer matrix model of vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs) was established. By utilizing such model, the dynamic gain characteristics of VCSOAs were investigated. The numerical results show that the dynamic gain characteristics of VCSOAs are influenced by the optical pump intensity, the input optical pulse width and the period of the distributed Bragg reflector (DBR).
