Abstract
The increasing incidence of metabolic risk factors in the modern world makes it reasonable to predict that atheromatous cardiovascular disease will become the primary cause of death worldwide by 2020.1 An understanding of the factors that influence the natural history of atherosclerosis and its complications is essential for the future development of strategies for prevention and therapeutic intervention. The use of intravascular ultrasound for imaging atheromatous plaque is of special interest in this regard. Here we review a large number of relevant clinical and experimental studies.
