Abstract
Xenogenic antisera prepared to KCl, perchloric acid, and deoxycholate extracts of serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary contain antibodies with specificity for ovarian carcinoma cells. In order to demonstrate selective reactivity with ovarian carcinoma sequential absorption with several normal tissues was required. Characterization of the tumor-associated antigen(s) suggests that it is a glycoprotein which appears in the exclusion volume of a Sephadex G-200 column. It is resistant to formalin fixation and processing and distinct from colonic carcinoembryonic antigen. The antigen was demonstrable in varying concentrations in the cytoplasm of nine ovarian carcinomas, and was absent from normal ovary and five unrelated types of carcinoma studied.
