Abstract
Colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer in the US and the second-most common cause of cancer deaths. Guidelines from national societies recommend routine screening for colorectal cancer starting at the age of 50 years in patients at average risk. Colonoscopy is a very important screening test that is thought to be playing a pivotal role in thedecline of colorectal cancer rates in developed countries by facilitating the early detection and the removal of adenomatous polyps. Adequate bowel preparation is essential before colonoscopy. Choosing an agent can be confusing, especially with so many agents available on the market today. In this article, we have reviewed the advantages and disadvantages ofavailable regimens and emphasised the need to consider split-dose regimens as well as the need for adequate hydration before and after colonoscopy.
