Abstract

We report an unusual case of primary histiocytic lymphoma of the esophagus without extraesophageal involvement. The patient reported having 'asthma' and dysphagia for 16 months. Although a midesophageal lesion was found that appeared carcinomatous on both x-ray and endoscopy, the first clue to the correct diagnosis lay in the patient's history of consistent responsiveness of his dysphagia to repeated courses of prednisone. The patient has achieved long-term remission on radiotherapy and chemotherapy alone.
