The author wishes to thank A. Goetzberger, Fraunhofer Institut f?r Solare Energiesysteme, Freiburg, F.R.G., for accepting this work as part of a PhD thesis. D. Smith and A. Walker, Heriot-Watt University, physics department, Edinburgh, U.K., have encouraged further development and funded the first PLS prototype through a SERC grant. Technical and logistic support from Edinburgh Instruments Ltd. in setting up the PLS prototype is gratefully acknowledged. Sergio Cova, Istituto di Flsica del Politecnico, Milan, Italy, generously provided the SPAD chips and the active quenching circuit. Without his helpful collaboration, encouraging comments and continuous interest in the PLS development from the very beginning, the project would not have been so successful.

N2 - Aim. Use spiral CT three dimension to assess recovery of function after operation of acetabular fracture. Methods. Clinical files of acetabular fracture. We have 8 cases of acetabular posterior wall fracture (all have hip joint posterior dislocation), 4 cases of anterior column fracture, 4 cases of acetabular anterior wall fracture, 5 cases of transverse fracture, 2 cases of anterior column and posterior half fracture, 4 case of "T" type fracture, 4 case of both column fracture, 2 cases of transverse and posterior wall fracture. Results. 8 cases have had ilium-groin approach. 19 cases have had Kocher-Langenbeck approach, 6 cases have had combined approach. According to the Judet assessment method, anatomical reduction was obtained in 12 cases, satisfied reduction in 21 cases. There were 3 cases of ischemia necrosis of head of femur after operation in later stage. According to the Matta assessment method, 12 cases were excellent, 15 cases are good, 4 cases were approve, 2 cases were dispatch. Conclusion. To complicated acetabular fracture spiral CT three dimension reconstruction can confirm the displacement and the degree of smash of the fracture, and can show the outline and third dimension of the whole pelvis. This has very special clinical significance for recovering to faction after operation of acetabular fracture.
