Abstract

Measurement of the single breath diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide DCO(SB) has gained acceptance as an index of pulmonary gas exchange, but many aspects of its use in occupational and epidemiologic settings remain controversial. The report is the result of a panel discussion at the American College of Chest Physicians' annual meeting in Boston on October 27, 1980, which attempted to define the role of DCO(SB) by reviewing the technical factors affecting its measurement, normal values, and the role of the test in the diagnosis of environmental pulmonary disorders.
