title = "Serological reactivities of human and baboon sera against EBNA and Herpesvirus papio-determined nuclear antigen (HUPNA)",
abstract = "Using our recently developed acid-fixed nuclear binding technique, an EBNA-like antigen was detected in both virus-producer and non-producer baboon lymphoid cell lines that carried Herpesvirus papio (HVP. We designated the antigen as HUPNA. Serological comparison of EBNA and HUPNA showed that: (i) all EBNA-positive sera reacted with both EBNA and HUPNA; (ii) none of the anti-HVP(VCA)-positive baboon sera reacted with EBNA; and (iii) approximately half of the anti-HPV(VCA)-positive baboon sera tested reacted with HUPNA. HUPNA could not be visualized by anticomplement immunofluorescence in situ.",

note = "Funding Information: Herpesvirus papio (HVP) is an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-related lymphotropic herpesvirus of baboons [1, 2]. HVP-producer lines express early antigen (EA) and viral capsid antigen (VCA), readily detected with human sera containing antibodies to EBV [1]. However, neither HVP-producer nor non-producer lines have been found to express a nuclear antigen by anticomplement immunofluorescence (ACIF) staining in situ. In a previous paper [3], we reported the presence of an EBNA-like nuclear antigen in HVP-transformed lymphoid lines, using our recently developed acid-fixed nuclear binding (AFNB) technique [4]. AFNB provides an amplification system for antigen detection, compared to ACIF staining in situ. We have found that HUPNA could be detected with EBNA-positive human sera [3]. It was previously shown, however, that anti-HVP(VCA)-positive baboon sera do not react with EBNA. It was therefore of interest to explore whether any of the baboon Acccptcd 5 Janua,'y 1978. *This work was supported in part by Contract No. N01 CP 33316 within the Virus Cancer Program of the National Cancer Institute and the Swedish Cancer Society.
