Abstract
In this article, Diane E. Meier, a geriatrician who has been at the forefront of efforts to develop and establish palliative care in the United States, describes the successful process of seeking funding to sustain the Center to Advance Palliative Care. The center is an acclaimed institution that was about to lose the steady, high-level of foundation investment that had supported it since its inception because the funder had decided to move on to new priorities. "Our experience may well be of benefit to a broad range of not-for-profit organizations seeking sustainability in an environment of scarce healthcare resources," Meier says.
