Abstract

Sciatic neuropathy is the second most common peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremity. Work-up including history, examination, and imaging studies can help practitioners confirm a suspected diagnosis. A diagnostic nerve block may also aid in the diagnosis of sciatic nerve injury. Conservative treatment options including therapy and pharmacotherapy are usually first-line modalities in the management of sciatic neuropathy. However, for refractory cases, neuromodulation has become a first-line treatment rather than spinal cord stimulation or pulsed radiofrequency ablation for sciatic neuropathy. This article summarizes the current evidence for peripheral nerve stimulation as a useful treatment option for sciatic neuropathy, as well as the described techniques for performing this procedure.
