Abstract

A 3-period, complete crossover study comparing the safety and efficacy of the MedLite medical device for muscle- and joint-pain relief, over-the-counter strength ibuprofen, and an ibuprofen placebo was conducted in 28 subjects with chronic knee pain, aged 23-64 yr. The subjects were blinded with regard to medication. Twenty-six subjects completed all 3 periods of the study. Knee pain was self-assessed with an analog rating scale, and the knee was objectively assessed by the same trained nurse practitioner in each period of the study. Additional objective measures of knee function, such as knee flexion, knee extension, and the number of stair-steps attainable, were made. The device outperformed both the placebo and ibuprofen with statistical significance in almost every objective outcome measure.
