Abstract
A number of risks attend the transfusion of homologous blood products, chief among them the possibility of infection with viral or bacterial agents that may survive routine screening and processing of donor blood, Infectious agents include B, non-A, non-B, and delta hepatitis viruses, human immunodeficiency virus, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus. In many clinical settings, alternatives to the use of homologous blood are available. The author reviews the most serious infectious agents found in donor blood and summarizes the options to homologous blood use.
