Abstract
Objective. To evaluate retinal thickness (RT) in eyes with BDR with and without clinically significant macular edema (CSME) and normal eyes using OCT. Methods. Consecutive patients with early BDR (VA ≥20/40) and normal controls were enrolled. Five 3.20 mm vertical cross-sectional OCT images through the center of fixation were obtained in each eye. Mean RT for 7 locations and the average mean RT was calculated for each eye. Results. 16 eyes (16 patients) with early BDR and 18 normal eyes were enrolled. The average mean RT was 249.7 μm for normal eyes and 269.7 μm for BDR eyes (p=0.003). Mean RT for BDR eyes without CSME (9 eyes) was 257.2 μm and with CSME (7 eyes) was 285.6 μm (p=0.004). Mean RT for CSME eyes was greater than controls (p=0.0000), but this was not true for non-CSME eyes (p=0.25). Among the individual 7 retinal locations, mean RT at fixation in eyes with BDR without CSME was the only individual location which was significantly thicker than the controls (183.1 μm vs. 154.3 μm) (p=0.002). Conclusions. OCT can detect differences in RT in eyes with early BDR with and without CSME when compared to controls.
