Abstract
Association with an organized religious group is a strong and positive factor in the lives of many older adults. Attendance at religious services and the use of prayer are among the strongest predictors of positive mental and physical health among the elderly. In this Psychiatry Rounds column, Dr. Lantz discusses the role that religion can play in the lives of patients and their caregivers, and the importance of inquiring about patients' religious or spiritual affiliations and beliefs in helping with advanced care planning, identifying coping skills, and promoting positive experiences that lead to better physical and emotional health outcomes.
